Located on the Eastside of Vancouver, in the Greater Vancouver metropolitan area, the community of Renfrew-Collingwood stretches across to the East boundary of Burnaby and extends West to Nanaimo Street. The Southern most boarder is E 41st and Broadway is the boundary to the North.
Residents enjoy quick access to the city’s commercial centers, especially along the Collingwood stretch of Kingsway, while local amenities are within easy walking distance. Predominantly a residential area, this family-friendly community features a diverse population and vibrant community spirit.
Grandview Highway, Kingsway, and Boundary Road are the major arterials, granting easy access to the lower mainland. Options are plentiful for commuters who prefer using public transport. Renfrew-Collingwood has five SkyTrain stations, with the Expo and Millenium lines servicing the area. The supply of buses is also plentiful.
For those who enjoy heading out on two wheels, Renfrew-Collingwood provides an impressive network of bike lanes and cycle tracks. Cycling to Downtown and Burnaby is quick and safe. The BC Parkway and the Central Valley Greenway have dedicated bike paths.
Being a family-oriented neighbourhood, there are several good schools in Renfrew-Collingwood. There are six public elementary schools, two public high schools, and a private high school for new immigrants to Canada. With an active family, it’s always nice to have a community centre to use. When it comes to shopping, there is no need to leave the neighbourhood. Whether you are doing bulk grocery shopping or stocking up on everyday items, you have a range of specialty stores and markets to choose from. TWO COMMUNITIES IN ONE
Although listed as separate communities, Renfrew and Collingwood have merged into one large neighborhood.
As older communities of Vancouver, Renfrew and Collingwood experienced massive growth and expansion in the 1940s (after WWII). By the start of the 60s, most of the residential and industrial areas had been developed. In keeping with the growth rate in the rest of Vancouver, almost 2,000 new family homes have been constructed since the late 1980s.
The real estate in the two areas comprises a very similar mix of townhouses, duplexes, and detached houses. The amenities are also similar, which further obscures the official border between the two communities. Renfrew-Collingwood covers an area of 8.2km2, bordering Broadway to the north, Nanaimo Street to the west, East 41st Avenue to the south, and Boundary Road to the east.

RENFREW-COLLINGWOOD REAL ESTATE
As a residential area, Renfrew-Collingwood comprises a good mix of condos, duplexes, and family houses. Sizes range from compact lofts to spacious multi-bedroom houses, many dating back to the 1960s and pre-1960s. Quiet residential streets and an abundance of good schools make this neighborhood a great choice for young working couples and families.
The community has evolved over the years in terms of density. Re-zoning has made way for detached homes to be replaced with duplexes and multi-family properties. Zoning is governed by the application of the Zoning and Development Bylaw, which prescribes how buildings may be used (residential and commercial), as well as placing restrictions on the construction of new buildings, extensions, or changes to existing buildings. The different zoning districts are labeled by a combination of letters and numbers. The C-2 district, for example, houses the larger shopping facilities, and RS-1 covers the majority of Renfrew-Collingwood’s single-family homes.
In addition to the regulations outlined in the District Schedule, some zones are subject to design review guidelines. Design review deals with factors such as style, character, the building materials used, and landscaping.
CD-1, or Comprehensive Development districts, are areas where a typical District Schedule approach is not suitable. Instances include specific sites such as the Broadway Campus of Vancouver Community College or broader areas such as the Downtown.
Buildings of Character, which were built before 1940, are listed in the Vancouver Heritage Register, and fall under specific zoning regulations due to their architectural and historical value.
